Merseyside Search and Rescue Team is currently a probationary Lowland Rescue Team providing Merseyside Police with specialist search teams and equipment to assist locating high risk, vulnerable, missing persons within Merseyside. In addition to which MerSAR can be called upon at anytime to assists other Lowland Rescue teams in other counties. There are approximately 36 Lowland Rescue teams in the UK. We are based by kind permission at ESTC – Emergency Services Training Centre based in Twelve Quays, Birkenhead.

We are proudly mentored by Community Rescue Service (Northern Ireland) and Cheshire Search and Rescue.

Our team members are highly trained, professional and unpaid volunteers from all walks of life. We are a registered charity and you will very often see both operational and non operational volunteers fundraising at various events and locations in Merseyside. We do not receive any Government money so we have to raise money for vital equipment and medical supplies such as medical equipment by carrying out fundraising duties.

All Search and Rescue teams are members of the Association of Lowland Search and Rescue (ALSAR). ALSAR set the training standards that we all have to reach, and the code of practice that we use, working alongside Police. With Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW), Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland (MRC of S), and the British Cave Rescue Council (BCRC), ALSAR members are nationally recognised as part of UK Search And Rescue capability.

The team is managed by an elected Management Committee composed of search volunteers.
